The Sudan ..Basic Information
The Sudan, with its present borders, has been known since the Turkish
era (the 19th Century A.D.). It occupies vast areas of the Nile Basin
and links Europe, the Mediterranean countries and Central Africa.
Located between West and East Africa, the Sudan becomes a cross-road of
Nations and cultures. It has continued to assume a prominent position
among the African nations in the various eras. It has always maintained
contacts with its neighbors and regional arena since ancient times.
The Geographical Location:
Sudan is located in the northeastern part of the Africa Continent
between latitudes 04 and 22 degrees north of the Equator and longitudes
22 and 38 east. It occupies a central location between Africa and the
Arab World.
Area:
The area of Sudan is 2.5 million square kilometers (about one million square miles).
It is the ninth biggest country in the world and one of the biggest
Arab and African countries in term of area. It assumes 8.3 percent of
the area of the African Continent. Its size equals 10 folds of the
total area of Britain or the size of France, Britain, Italy, Spain
Portugal, Belgium, Sweden and Norway collectively.
The distance between the most far point in its desert north and that in
its equatorial south is 2000 kilometers, and between the remotest point
in its west and that in its east is 1700 kilometers. The length of its
borders with the neighbouring countries reaches 750 kilometers. It also
has a coastal line of 750 kilometers on the Red Sea in the east.

Sudan borders ten countries, namely Egypt, Libya, Chad, Central Africa
Republic, Democratic Congo, Uganda, Kenya, Ethiopia, Eritrea and the
Kingclom of Saudi Arabia across the Red Sea
